Every year, 21st June (at the time of summer solstice), from sundown on through the night, Paris is alive with the sound of music. This is the night of the Fête de la Musique, held not just in Paris - held not just in the capital but in a number of other French towns - when all sorts of musicians gather on the streets outside the bars and cafes to give free performances. We were there in 2008, falling across it by accident, and were treated to covers of Pixies, Bob Marley and Rolling Stones tunes, as well as getting to listen to some actual French songs, sung by a Breton male voice choir. There's a lovely atmosphere on the streets and everyone's in a good mood. Do book a trip for June next year if you can!
