Ok - I know it's not technically Paris, but it nearly is, and the place certainly has an extremely close connection with Paris - it just happened that its kings didn't fancy the idea of ruling from Paris, that's all.. Versailles, 1901, August 10th. Eleanor Jourdain and Anne Mobery are visiting, walking between the Grand and Petit Trianons (the second was Marie Antoinette's bolt-hole). They pass through a garden and a feeling of extreme sadness descends on them - all is dream-like. They witness a number of people dressed in period costume, including a lady sketching and a footman - they notice an old plough as well. On discussing their experience at a later date they realise that Mobery was the only one who actually saw the sketching lady . It is later found that she looks just like Marie Antoinette, as portrayed in a painting by Wertmüller.
They return the following year to investigate further, and it seems that the landscape they had seen on their previous visit was changed. The plough they had witnessed would not have been there in 1901, they are told, but would have been in 1789. They decide that October 5, 1789 was the date they witnessed, as this was when and where the queen was told that a mob was marching on the palace gates. They feel this accounts for the gloomy sadness felt at the spot. |
