A Bout de Souffle (Breathless)
![]()
This 1959 existentialist masterpiece by Jean Luc-Godard was, apart from the opening scenes, filmed entirely on location in Paris. The Champs Elysées is where Jean Seberg is selling her newspapers and Saint Germain is used for the night-time bar scenes. The hotel Les Rives de Notre Dame in 15 Quai St Michel was used for indoor shots, or as it was known the, the Hotel de Suede. Michel and Patricia's final night is spent in 11 Rue Campagne Première , and Michel is mown down in that street. (By the way, a number of artists lived in this Montparnasse street at one time or another. I'll be dedicating an article to it at a later date).
Amelie (Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain
![]()
We couldn't possibly leave Amelie out of this one. Cute beyond belief, this film made Paris look magical - even the bits that in real life leave a bit to be desired. Notre Dame de Paris is of course used as the fallling-off spot for a tourist who falls on top of and kills Amélie’s mother. You'll find Amélie’s apartment at 56 Rue des Trois Frères - just follow the crowds of the film's fans - and then follow them on to the Café des Deux Moulins at 15 Rue Lepic - apparently the now extremely popular café has been sold and the new owner has agreed to make no changes to it (and why would he/she?). Au Marche de la Butte is the greengrocers that features, and it's at Passage des Abbesses (these last three addresses are in the Montmartre area). Amélie also skips stones in the trendy Canal St Martin in the 10th arrondissement, and spies on photograph collectors in Gare de l'Est. She's also seen cycling in the Rue des Deux Gares between Gare de l'Est and Gare du Nord (both of these are in the 10th as well).
Charade

This romantic thriller's a bit of a classic - made in 1963 and starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, it's a must-see anyway, but for its Paris locations it's hard to beat. The stars meet up at the Theatre Vrai Guignolet, in the Jardins des Champs Élysées, Rond Point des Champs Élysées, at the junction of avenue Matignon and avenue Gabriel. Amazingly, the show is still going, with afternoon performances on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (Métro: Franklin D Roosevelt or Champs-Élysées Clémenceau). (Thanks to Movie Locations for that information. They stay in the Hotel St Jacques, 35 Rue de l'Ecole in the Latin Quarter. The famous colonnade scenes are filmed in the Palais Royal, and of course there's always the romantic night-time trip they take up the Seine in a bateau mouche. |
